Little Chickadees Nature Playschool
Values

Child Centered Learning: Instead of following a one-size-fits-all curriculum, I plan our weeks based on the needs & interests of individual children, and the natural rhythm of the year. For example, in the fall we study pumpkins and falling leaves, and in the spring we study frogs. If children are more interested in bugs than frogs, I will shift gears and follow their lead. I have several resource guides that support this style of curriculum planning, including Exploring Nature with Young Children by Roots and Shoots, Earthschooling Pre-Kindergarten, and Four Seasons Guide by the Dodge Nature Center Preschool. This type of planning ensures that everything we do is meaningful and hands-on, two essential ingredients for effective learning for young children.

Experiences: Children at Little Chickadees are given the opportunity to participate in real life experiences every day, from weeding the garden, to kneading bread, to feeding the chickens. And nature provides endless opportunities for sensory experiences and exploration.

Risk Taking: Children are allowed to take "safe risks" here. Safe risks are those in which they may get a bump or bruise, but they are not at risk for serious injury. An example would be balancing on a log or jumping from a stump. When children are allowed these opportunities, they learn to properly assess risks and know their limits, and develop confidence.

Fresh Air: We are outside every day in all weather and in all seasons, and for as long as possible. The benefits of being outdoors in nature are countless. And during the pandemic, the outdoors is undoubtedly the safest place to spend our time.

Positive Behavior Management: I manage behavior through providing a safe, predictable and engaging environment, maintaining a focus on outdoor learning, and maintaining positive and loving relationships. I use behavior management tools such as natural or logical consequences, teaching positive social skills, and nurturing empathy.
